Berkeley Research Group (BRG), an Emeryville, CA-headquartered management consultancy, has hired Rick May, MD, as a managing director in Washington, DC and Grant Mendeljian as a director in Dallas.

May joins BRG’s healthcare practice, where he will work with hospitals on clinical quality improvement initiatives.

After 17 years of private practice as an orthopedic surgeon, May spent the last decade as a healthcare consultant. He most recently spent seven years at Vizient, where he was a senior principal who built and scaled the healthcare quality and performance improvement consulting practice. Under his leadership, the practice served more than 100 clients and developed several consulting products and advanced data analytics to help hospitals improve quality metrics and patient outcomes.

Before Vizient, May was a managing partner at Ascent Clinical Quality Improvement.

He earned his MD and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. May also has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Colorado College.

“Rick is truly one of the founding fathers of healthcare quality and performance improvement in the United States,” said David Wildebrandt, a managing director and one of the leaders of BRG’s healthcare practice. “His unrivaled insight into the operational and clinical challenges facing today’s hospitals and health systems will bring immense value to BRG’s clients.

Mendeljian joins BRG’s construction practice, where he will advise owners, developers, contractors, designers, municipalities, and their counsel on strategic planning, estimating, procurement, on-site operational execution, project auditing, and construction disputes.

He brings more than 25 years of industry experience, having been involved in over $3 billion in constructed projects. Mendeljian has been involved in large projects across residential, commercial, retail, education, healthcare, airports, and sports facilities, among others.

He previously was VP for preconstruction at Moss & Associates Construction and chief estimator at Turner Construction Company. Before that, he was manager of conceptual estimating at The Christman Company and a project manager at Turner Construction Company.

Mendeljian has a bachelor’s degree in construction management from Michigan State University and a project management professional certification.

“Grant’s extensive experience and track record across all aspects of general contracting are a rare advantage for his clients,” said Jeffrey Wentz, a managing director in BRG’s construction practice. “From organizational strategy to project planning and on-site execution, Grant will be an invaluable resource for a range of clients throughout the construction lifecycle.”

BRG earlier this year welcomed Rich Rieger as a Chicago-based managing director in its health analytics practice.

BRG has more than 1,600 employees across 45 global offices. The firm specializes in disputes and investigations, corporate finance, and performance improvement.
