Berkeley Research Group (BRG), an Emeryville, CA-headquartered management consultancy, has hired Robert Mills as a managing director and Frank Stabile as a director in its intellectual property practice in Los Angeles.

The two economic analysts join BRG from Micronomics, a boutique economic research and consulting firm. They bring extensive experience in the economic analysis and quantification of damages for patent, trademark and copyright infringement, and trade secret theft disputes.

“Today's law firms—and their clients—increasingly depend on sophisticated economic analyses when evaluating the harm involved in significant IP disputes," said Jeff Stec, a BRG managing director and leader of the IP practice. "Robert and Frank's diverse skillsets and capabilities in this area will boost our ability to serve clients engaged in high-stakes IP matters around the world."

Mills has served as an expert on royalty calculations and FRAND licensing, as well as conducted economic analyses and damages assessments for life insurance policies spanning hundreds of products. He has testified as an economic expert at federal and state courts, the International Trade Commission (ITC), and arbitrations.

Mills previously spent 27 years at Micronomics. Before that, he was an associate consultant at Hobson Johnson & Associates.

He has a master’s degree in economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a master’s degree in applied economics and bachelor’s degree in economics and history from Portland State University.

Stabile has completed numerous analyses on reasonable royalties, lost profits, unjust enrichment, and consumer overcharges. He has advised on enforcement actions and disputes relating to FRAND royalty rates in US courts, the ITC, and arbitrations.

Stabile previously spent 18 years at Micronomics.

He has a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of California, Los Angeles.

BRG recently hired Ceren Canal Aruoba as a managing director and co-lead of the newly formed consumer protection, product liability, and environment practice.
