L.E.K. delivers pro bono strategy work for Boston's Boch Center

Boston-headquartered management consultancy L.E.K. Consulting recently completed a pro bono strategy project for Boston’s Boch Center, a nonprofit performing arts organization.

The Boch Center operates Boston’s historic Wang and Shubert Theatres, which are home to a range of events across theater, classical and popular music, opera, musicals, dance, and other performing arts. The Center also runs education and community outreach programs to inspire appreciation for art, culture, and creativity.

L.E.K. used its expertise across consumer-led strategy and entertainment to build a roadmap for the Center to “expand its connection with millennial and younger audiences and philanthropists.” The roadmap outlines how the nonprofit can better cultivate the involvement and support of millennials, including young parents and art lovers.

Millennials volunteer and give less to charity than older generations – especially boomers and the “greatest generation” (those born before 1945). Whether that has to do with decreased social capital and trust, decreased wealth levels, or other factors, and how much it will be mitigated as Gen Y gets older, is another matter. In any case, nonprofits’ struggles to engage younger cohorts becomes an existential matter as older generations die out.

“Because the Boch Center relies on philanthropy for a significant part of its operating budget, it must find ways to bond with and serve up-and-coming generations whose connection with, enjoyment in, and commitment to the organization can grow over time,” said L.E.K. Managing Director and Boston office head Rob Haslehurst, a consumer-sector partner at L.E.K. who co-led the project. “It has been an honor to help this important, world-class institution make the right investments in the future so it will always be able to bring performing arts to life for audiences of all ages.”

As part of the strategy work, L.E.K. surveyed Boston-area art lovers, interviewed peer organizations, and performed working sessions with Boch Center leaders.

Pro bono strategy work is analogous to the old “teach a man how to fish” saying. Rather than simply giving a donation, which many consultancies also do, firms can deliver added value by providing expensive strategy work free-of-charge. Such consulting work, which is beyond the means of many bare-bones nonprofit budgets, can set up organizations for future success beyond what a modest one-time donation ever could.

“We are grateful for L.E.K.’s valuable contribution to the future of our institution and our mission to support the vitality of the performing arts and make it a bigger part of the lives of Boston-area residents and visitors,” Josiah Spaulding, president and CEO of the Boch Center, said.
