FTI Consulting has hired Todd Ruback, a seasoned data privacy leader, as a managing director in its information governance, privacy, and security (IGP&S) practice within its technology segment.

Based in New York, Ruback brings more than 17 years of experience working at the intersection of privacy and advertising technology. At FTI, he will advise clients on consent management and governance for data practices related to online tracking technology (most prominently observed in the form of website “cookies”).

“Data privacy is an increasingly urgent issue for organizations in the U.S. and globally, particularly as it relates to user consent and the use of online tracking and advertising technologies. General counsel and data privacy officers are struggling to align the need for strong data protection practices with the business imperative of effectively engaging with consumers online,” said Jake Frazier, global head of the IGP&S practice. “Todd brings a wealth of experience in this nuanced field of data privacy and is well positioned to help our clients follow best practices, comply with a patchwork of regulatory requirements, and maintain effective digital marketing activities.”

Ruback has deep expertise leading privacy engagements across adoption of new technology, adtech risk assessments and governance, consent and preference management, design of target operating models, and privacy in cloud migration.

He joins FTI from Promontory Financial Group (IBM Consulting), where he spent the last three years as a director and practice co-leader overseeing projects in privacy and data protection in the US East region. Before that, Ruback spent a year as executive director for global privacy compliance strategic initiatives at JPMorgan Chase. He also previously served as chief privacy officer and general counsel at Ghostery, a privacy and security-related browser extension, and at Evidon, a marketing analytics and compliance services firm and the former owner of Ghostery.

Earlier in his career, Ruback was a regional manager at Cognizant, focusing on financial services industry clients. He also spent more than twenty years as an attorney, focusing on privacy and technology and creditor representation.

He has a JD and bachelor’s degree from the University of Denver.

“Given the current environment of increasing privacy regulation and public scrutiny over how businesses use and protect consumer data, organizations are looking to simultaneously optimize the data they collect while reducing reliance on third-party data and empowering consumers with control over how their data is used,” Ruback said. “I look forward to working with our deep bench of privacy and governance experts at FTI Technology to help our clients solve these and other tough data protection challenges.”

FTI – a leading consulting firm in the turnaround, risk, and disputes arena – earlier this month welcomed space industry expert Ernie Chung as a managing director in its corporate finance and restructuring segment.
