David Sawyer joins Teneo as head of US financial advisory practice
David Sawyer has joined Teneo, a global consulting firm, as leader of the US financial advisory practice. He will be based in the firm’s New York headquarters.
Sawyer brings over 30 years of experience in global financial markets as a principal investor and strategic advisor to the role, where he will grow and expand Teneo’s financial advisory service offering in the US.
Teneo’s financial services offering has expanded to more than 350 professionals globally who provide consulting in restructuring, insolvency, and M&A, among other areas. The practice was significantly strengthened through the acquisition of Deloitte UK’s restructuring business in 2021 and KPMG’s restructuring business in the Cayman and British Virgin Islands earlier this year.
Teneo also this year expanded its financial advisory practice into the Middle East with the hiring of two professionals from AlixPartners.
"David brings an incredible wealth of experience to the firm and will be a great leader to help us execute our ambitious growth strategy for the U.S. market,” said Daniel Butters, CEO of Teneo's global financial advisory business. “Building out our Financial Advisory business integrated with Teneo's broader services including strategy and communications, management consulting, risk advisory and talent in the U.S. will create a truly unique offering for clients not available anywhere in the market today."
Sawyer has focused on distressed debt and restructuring for a significant part of his career, having held roles as a strategic advisor, distressed debt and special situations investor, and senior lender and active equity owner.
He previously spent over two years as head of special assets at Golub Capital, a $40-billion direct lender and credit asset manager. Before that he spent three years at Ankura, where he was a senior managing director and co-head of the turnaround and restructuring practice. In the role, Sawyer built out the practice team to 90+ professionals while diversifying service offerings.
Sawyer also previously spent seven years as global head of workout and restructuring at Barclays Capital and four years as portfolio group and restructuring leader at Silver Point Capital.
“Teneo is quickly becoming a global force in the restructuring and broader financial advisory industry," Sawyer said. "I am delighted to be joining the team during this exciting period for the business and helping to further grow Teneo's Financial Advisory business in the U.S."
Teneo’s other major practices are communications, risk advisory, talent advisory, and management consulting. Billing itself as the “CEO advisory firm,” Teneo works with a significant number of Fortune 100 and FTSE 100 companies. The consultancy has more than 1,500 people across 40 offices globally.
