Florida Power & Light won the top national honor at PA Consulting’s 22nd annual ReliabilityOne Awards, which recognize the most reliable electric utilities in North America.

Florida Power & Light also was the overall top-ranked utility firm in 2021 (tied with San Diego Gas & Electric) and in 2020.

PA’s rankings are based on scores in resiliency, reliability, storm response, technology and innovation, sustainability, and customer engagement.

“We are thrilled to award the National Reliability Award to Florida Power & Light who continues to raise the bar with ingenious resiliency solutions,” Gregg Edeson, PA Consulting’s ReliabilityOne co-program director, said. “This year they focused on continued hardening of their distribution systems against hurricanes and storms with their successful Storm Secure Undergrounding Program by purposely shortening the restoration curves and improving restoration efficiencies, which was successfully demonstrated during Hurricane Ian.”

PA analyzes utility companies using publicly available data from the System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI), which measures average outage duration per customer, and the System Average Interruption Frequency Index (SAIFI), which measures the average number of interruptions per customer.

The indices showed a slight increase in investor-owned utility (IOU) average outage duration, jumping half a minute to 122 minutes in 2021. Average outage frequency decreased slightly.

The regional winners were:

Northeast Region, Metropolitan – Consolidated Edison Company of New York
Northeast Region, Suburban and Rural – Orange and Rockland Utilities

“Congratulations to Florida Power & Light and all this year’s winners,” Derek HasBrouck, PA Consulting’s ReliabilityOne co-program director, said. “PA works with the top utilities in America, and those that participate in the ReliabilityOne program, on average, experienced 35 percent fewer sustained outages, and outages were 50 percent shorter than the average US investor-owned utility. This proves that program participation leads to tangible benefits to consumers.”

The awards reception was held at the Nascar Hall of Fame in Charlotte.
