TAL Global releases new methodology for active shooter situations

TAL Global, a Silicon Valley-based security and risk consulting firm, has introduced its “Prepare-React-Recover (PRR) methodology for active shooter/assailant situations in a workplace setting.

The firm says PRR is an improvement over the popular Run, Hide, Fight (RHF) approach developed over 20 years ago.

The older RHF framework is reactive, TAL says, responding to an underway or imminent attack – which reduces likelihood of safety during a mass shooting. The firm’s new approach is proactive and focuses on “preparedness, timely reaction, and recovery," said Oscar Villanueva, COO of TAL.

“Active shooting incidents have become more frequent today, causing significant disruption and anxiety in the workplace,” Villanueva added. “Sensible ways to safeguard people and property is critical in an increasingly challenging security environment."TAL Global releases new methodology for active shooter situations
According to non-profit organization The Violence Project, 30% of US mass shootings between 1966 and 2021 occurred at workplaces. After residences, the most common locations for mass shootings are retail locations and restaurants and bars.

Mass shootings in the US have spiked since the Covid-19 pandemic, with 600+ events occurring every year since 2020, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive. Between 2014 and 2019, the average number of mass shootings was 349.

Some of the key parts of the PRR method are:

Prepare: Understand the risk, know the limitations when reacting, and visualize a plan of action beforehand.
React: Identify where the incident is happening and who is involved, execute the plan of action, and prioritize threats.
Recover: Obtain medical help if required, conduct post-incident assessment, utilize mental health counseling, and refine plans.
