Jerry Smith and Tim Trifilo join Alvarez & Marsal Tax
Jerry Smith and Tim Trifilo have joined Alvarez & Marsal Tax, the tax advisory affiliate of consulting firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M), as US-based managing directors.
Based in Atlanta, Smith brings over 30 years of experience advising companies and partnerships on federal and international tax aspects of acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, and financings. He has represented Fortune 500 companies in relation to IRS controversies, including providing support at the audit level and at IRS appeals.
Smith joins A&M from law firm Jones Day, where he spent 13 years as a tax partner. Before that, he spent eight years as a tax partner at law firm Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton. Smith was also previously a tax partner at KPMG, where he spent 16 years.
He has a JD from Vanderbilt University and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Based in Washington, DC, Trifilo has over 25 years of experience focusing on structuring domestic and cross-border private equity funds and alternative investments, and managing related tax reporting. He has deep expertise advising asset managers and institutional investors on fund formation, REIT formation, due diligence, and transactions.
Trifilo joins A&M from Crowe US, where he spent four years as a partner and leader of the alternative investment funds tax practice. Before that, he spent four years as a partner and leader of the real estate practice at CohnReznick.
Earlier in his career, Trifilo spent 18 years with PwC, where he was latterly a partner. He also spent two years at EY, where he was a tax senior associate.
Trifilo has an MBA from New York University and a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance from the University at Buffalo.
A&M also announced the addition of three UK-based tax managing directors: Steve Henshaw, Anthony Whatling, and Tom Lobb.
The new hires build on the New York-based consultancy’s recent expansion of its tax practice into Switzerland with the hiring of Kersten Honold, PhD, and into Australia with the hiring of Sean Keegan.
