Strategy firm The Messina Group has acquired Segal Communications, a San Francisco-based public relations and communications firm.

Founded in 2018, Segal Communications advises firms across consumer technology, food, lifestyle, and hospitality on media and influencer relations and social, digital, and experiential marketing. The boutique firm is led by Sarah Segal, who worked as a broadcast journalist before establishing herself as a communications leader and trusted brand advisor.

Segal Communications’ client roster includes Republic Wireless, HayMax Hotels, and Shane Co.

TMG’s acquisition of Segal Communications will expand the firm’s San Francisco office and bolster its strategic communications capability. Sarah Segal, alongside colleagues Sarah Mowad (senior account executive) and Sara Wildman (social media & content executive), will join TMG's more than 25-strong team.

“Sarah has built an agency that shares the same culture and entrepreneurial values as ours, along with deep expertise to complement our client suite of services," said Jim Messina, CEO of The Messina Group. "Her background as a journalist arms her with an invaluable perspective that we anticipate to be critical as newsrooms continue to transition to digital formats."

TMG in 2018 acquired Greenbrier Partners, a consultancy with deep expertise advising large organizations on communications and media relations, crisis management, and public affairs. The DC-based strategy firm is also a co-founder of Amplify, a full-service media buying agency.

"We look forward to continuing to grow the Segal practice with the support, guidance, and camaraderie of The Messina Group company staff,” Segal said.

TMG was founded in 2013 by Jim Messina, President Barack Obama’s former deputy chief of staff for operations and the architect of Obama’s successful 2012 re-election campaign.

The boutique firm works with corporate, advocacy, and political clients on navigating regulatory hurdles, solving public policy problems, and winning elections. The firm advised on election campaigns for the British Conservative Party in 2015 and 2017, as well as on Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s re-election campaign in 2016. TMG has also worked on strategy engagements with clients such as Instacart, the US Soccer Foundation, and pharmacy startup Pillpack.
