Sanofi joins PA Consulting and PulPac's Blister Pack Collective

Sanofi Consumer Healthcare (CHC) has joined the Blister Pack Collective, an initiative from PA Consulting and Swedish R&D firm PulPac that aims to develop and scale adoption of fiber-based blister packaging.

The Blister Pack Collective brings together pharma and consumer goods firms to drive adoption of more sustainable blister packs, generally used for pills and chewing gum. PA and PulPac have developed the underlying technology, Dry-Molded Fiber (DMF), which can bring functioning blister packs to market.

DMF tablet packs create up to 80% less carbon dioxide than plastic and wet-molded fiber, use minimal water in production, and are comparable to PVC in terms of design and tablet count. They can be recycled like regular paper packaging and offer the opportunity to eliminate 100,000+ tons of plastic medicine packaging annually.

As a founding member of the collective, Sanofi CHC will invest in the development of DMF tablet packs, the adoption of which would eliminate the firm’s single-use plastic packaging and improve the environmental profile of its products.

Sanofi CHC is also a founding member of the Bottle Collective, which focuses on DMF-based bottles.

“We are delighted to join forces with Sanofi CHC on the Blister Pack Collective,” Tony Perrotta, PulPac partnership lead at PA Consulting, said. “Sanofi CHC is already leading the way with DMF integrations in their Bottle Collective work, and this additional partnership will lead to a better environmental footprint and reduced plastics in future healthcare packaging.”

France Depaix, global head of design, product sustainability, and packaging innovation at Sanofi CHC, added, “We are proud to be a part of the Blister Pack Collective, as we take significant steps to reduce our environmental footprint and contribute to a healthier planet. By fostering collaboration and adopting innovative solutions, we aspire to set new benchmarks for sustainability, inspiring our peers and partners to join us in this transformative journey.”
