AlixPartners, a New York-headquartered management consultancy, has promoted David Garfield and Rob Hornby to co-chief executive officers, effective February 1.

Garfield and Hornby will succeed Simon Freakley, who has led AlixPartners since 2015 and oversaw a period of significant growth for the firm. Freakley will remain at AlixPartners as executive chairman.

“As proud as I am of our firm’s achievements over the past nine years, I am equally energized about what lies ahead,” Freakley said. “As our clients regularly tell us, AlixPartners is uniquely qualified to help them capitalize on the opportunities and mitigate the challenges, arising from an increasingly disrupted business environment. I am delighted that David and Rob have taken on this role and I look forward to working with them as they lead the firm to even greater success.”

Garfield is based in Chicago and has more than 25 years of professional services sector experience, with a focus on managing client relationships. He has been at AlixPartners since 2003 and most recently served as global head of industries, where he was responsible for the firm’s commercial activities by sector. Before that, Garfield was leader of the Americas and Asia regions.

Before joining AlixPartners, he was global relationship partner at PwC and president and board director at Encore Corporation.

Garfield has an MBA from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Williams College.

Hornby is based in London and has over 30 years of experience in IT strategy and implementation. He has been at AlixPartners since 2011, most recently as head of the EMEA region. Hornby also previously served as chief digital officer and head of the firm’s digital practice.

Before AlixPartners, he was chief information officer of the wealth management group at Old Mutual and software delivery and support director at Sky Television. Earlier in his career, Hornby was an IT consultant at Arthur Andersen Business Consulting.

He holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees in computer science from Aston University in the UK.

“David and I are inheriting an incredible platform for growth and innovation at an exciting time for both our firm and the industry we are a part of,” Hornby said. “It’s a sector in which we know we already stand out, but there is even more opportunity to do so ahead of us as we blend technological precision with best-in-class human insight.”

AlixPartners provides consulting in turnaround and restructuring, performance improvement, risk and disputes, economics, transactions, technology, and leadership. The firm has more than 2,500 employees across 20+ global offices.
