FTI Consulting on Tuesday announced that chief financial officer Ajay Sabherwal is leaving the firm on September 12 for a role outside the consulting industry. Paul Linton, FTI’s chief strategy and transformation officer, will hold the CFO role on an interim basis while the firm conducts a search for a permanent replacement.

Based in FTI’s Washington, DC headquarters, Sabherwal has been CFO since 2016. Between 2010 and 2016, he served as CFO of FairPoint Communications, joining the telecom services company shortly after it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Sabherwal helped guide the company through a restructuring process – working with FTI, who represented the firm’s creditors – that led to its emergence from bankruptcy and its relisting on the Nasdaq in 2011.

Before that, he was CFO of Mendel Biotechnology, Aventine Renewable Energy, and Choice One Communications.

Before his tenure as a finance leader, Sabherwal was a telecom equity analyst at CIBC World Markets and Barclays de Zoete Wedd. He was also previously a consultant at Deloitte.

Sabherwal has an MBA from Manchester Business School in the UK and a master’s degree in economics and bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Birla Institute of Technology & Science in India.

“On behalf of our Board of Directors and our leadership team, I would like to thank Ajay for his leadership and many contributions to FTI Consulting over the last nine years. Ajay is a terrific professional, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors,” said Steven Gunby, CEO and chairman of FTI Consulting.

Sabherwal added, “I would like to thank Steve and the entire team at FTI Consulting for their support over the last nine years. I am proud of our success, and it has been an honor to work with such a talented group of dedicated professionals.”

Linton has 25 years of experience in strategy, operations, organization, and large-scale transformation. He has been at FTI since 2014. Before that, Linton spent 14 years with Boston Consulting Group, where he was a partner and managing director.

FTI has over 7,900 employees in 32 countries and territories who help organizations manage change, mitigate risk, and resolve disputes.
