Chicago-based accounting and consulting firm Crowe LLP has named Rex Voorheis as its first chief information security officer (CISO) and Steve Strammello as its new chief risk officer (CRO). Voorheis has been with Crowe for 20 years, while Strammello is a 26-year veteran of the firm.

Rex Voorheis brings extensive expertise in cybersecurity to the newly created role of CISO, having led the enterprise information security and privacy functions at Crowe for the past decade. In that time, his team has grown to nearly 30 security professionals.

As CISO, Voorheis will continue to lead the information security and privacy functions, while also developing information security strategy and practices, and engaging with clients on security-related issues.

Voorheis joined Crowe in 1999 as a senior manager in network infrastructure and information security. Prior to that, he was a senior analyst in networking at NIBCO and a manager in communications operations as Associates Bancorp. He holds an MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University, as well as a BS in accounting from Michigan State University.

"Our clients entrust us with their sensitive data and it's our responsibility to put policies, processes, and technologies in place to allow us to best serve our clients while protecting data and addressing any regulations that may apply," Voorheis said.

Steve Strammello succeeds Fred Bauters, who is retiring in April 2020. As chief risk officer, Strammello will oversee Crowe’s general counsel and audit quality functions, and will manage the enterprise risk management program. The consultancy has 4,000 employees and annual revenues of $884 million, and is one of seven global firms in Gartner’s “magic quadrant” for risk consulting services.

Prior to becoming CRO, Strammello was a partner in the firm’s consulting group, overseeing the delivery of governance, risk, and compliance consulting services. He joined Crowe in 1993.

Strammello is a certified public accountant and holds a BS in accounting from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

"The chief risk officer position carries an important fiduciary responsibility to our clients, our people, and our partner-principals to embed sound risk management in the management of our firm," Strammello said.

The bulk of Crowe’s staff and operations are based in the US, with further international locations in the Cayman Islands; New Delhi, India; and London and Paris. The firm is a member of the Crowe Global network, which spans 200+ independent firms across 130 countries. Crowe Global has global revenues of $4.3 billion and an employee headcount of 36,540.
