Consulting firm Bain & Company has acquired Sutton Place Strategies (SPS), a New York-based deal origination tool and transaction database for private equity firms and mergers and acquisitions advisors.

Born out of the Great Recession, SPS was founded in 2009 to support M&A professionals with best-in-class deal sourcing data and analytics. The firm’s data and tools allow investors to map sector-specific deal flows and improve target identification, and enables advisors to assess deal coverage and map the most relevant buyer universe.

SPS’s database of North American private equity and corporate M&A transactions covers more than 60,000 deals since 2013, and includes proprietary data on process competitiveness and estimated deal size range. It can also integrate with CRM platforms for real-time access to deal data.

Additionally, SPS’s team of more than a dozen professionals provides custom deal coverage analyses for individual funds and investors.

Bain’s acquisition of SPS will add to its suite of proprietary data offerings that support private equity and M&A advisors in strategy, sourcing, diligence, and post-acquisition value creation. The leading consulting firm has deep expertise advising private equity firms on data-driven investments globally.

"Together, Bain and SPS will give private equity firms, corporate investors and transaction advisors an unparalleled view of deal making activity," said Hugh MacArthur, head of Bain's global private equity practice. "Arming investors with the intelligence they need to improve their deal sourcing and identify actionable targets in their sweet spot will be a game-changer for the industry."

Nadim Malik, founder and CEO of Sutton Place Strategies, added, "The SPS team is very excited and fortunate to partner with Bain. We are completely aligned in our commitment to deliver exceptional value to our clients and look forward to accomplishing great things together."

Bain in December 2019 acquired Pyxis, a New York-based consumer behavior analytics firm. The deal strengthened Bain’s ability to provide private equity, institutional, and corporate clients with data-rich views of their customers and competitors’ customers.

The Boston-based management consulting firm has more than 10,000 employees in 37 countries, with annual revenue of $4.5 billion.
