Fernando Villasana has joined the Boston office of Sustainserv, a Zurich-headquartered ESG (environmental, social, and governance) consultancy.

Villasana has over 20 years of experience in environmental and climate-related fields, including eight years at the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), where he helped shape corporate decarbonization strategies.

In his new role, Villasana will support Sustainserv’s consulting teams as they guide clients on setting science-based greenhouse gas targets.

He most recently served as corporate decarbonization research lead at SBTi, where he coordinated research to define effective emission reduction strategies and substantiate corporate climate claims.

Villasana previously was director of consulting services at GreenMomentum and clean technology coordinator for the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Mexico.

He has a degree in industrial engineering from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM) in Mexico and an executive master's degree in environmental management from the Business School of the School of Industrial Organization (EOI) in Spain.

“Science-based greenhouse gas targets are the gold standard for corporate greenhouse gas management and target setting,” said Matthew Gardner, PhD, managing partner for Sustainserv in the US. “While our team has successfully supported dozens of companies in their greenhouse gas reduction pathways, when we had the opportunity to bring in someone with Fernando’s experience and credibility in the space, we jumped at it. He brings great experience in the methodologies in both target setting, but also reduction pathways – insights that are so important to our clients.”

Sustainserv was founded in 2001 by scientists and academics Bernd Kasemir, Matthew Gardner, and Stephan Lienin. The firm has grown to 40+ consultants across offices in Zurich, Frankfurt, Boston, and Nashville.

Sustainserv provides services in ESG strategy, implementation and monitoring, and reporting and communication.
