Booz Allen Hamilton has hired Frank Calvelli, former principal deputy director of the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), as a senior vice president.

Calvelli will join the management and technology consultancy’s national security business, where he will lead engagements related to intelligence and space.

Calvelli joins Booz Allen after a 34-year career in government – spending the last eight years as deputy director of the NRO, the defense department agency responsible for designing, building, launching, and operating the reconnaissance satellites of the US federal government. The NRO’s classified budget is believed to be the largest of any intelligence agency.

As deputy director, Calvelli helped manage the day-to-day operations of the 3,500-person organization and oversaw a portfolio of programs including satellite and ground development, mission operations, and facilities.  Prior to that, he held various senior roles in the NRO, including in systems engineering, mission operations, and satellite and ground system acquisition. Booz Allen has strong capabilities in building and integrating space systems, according to the firm, and Calvelli’s addition will help it expand and further integrate across multiple space systems.

The McLean, VA-based firm’s national security business delivers consulting services across intelligence analysis, operational planning, and emerging technology.

Booz Allen last year won a $178-million contract from the US Navy and US Air Force Space Command to support the modernization of GPS systems.
