L.E.K. Consulting aligns with Science Based Targets Initiative
Management consultancy L.E.K. Consulting has announced it has signed onto the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
The SBTi commits its more than 2,000 corporate signatories to set, measure, and report science-based reduction targets in line with the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. As a signatory, L.E.K. will have its net-zero targets independently verified against a set of science-based criteria.
The consulting firm last year pledged to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. Net-zero requires a reduction in emissions as well as investment in projects that remove the remaining carbon dioxide produced by a firm’s operations – such as forests, farms, and carbon capture and mineralization technologies.
L.E.K.’s sustainability strategy includes converting its offices to renewable energy and working with its employees to reduce carbon emissions through hybrid work and reduced business travel frequency. The Boston-headquartered firm is also helping client organizations to develop their own carbon reduction plans and embed sustainability in their business strategies.
L.E.K. has been carbon neutral since 2008, which generally entails purchasing carbon offset credits to neutralize a company’s carbon emissions.
"We have taken our long-standing policy of carbon neutrality further by making the pledge to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 because the science demands it, our clients and staff expect it, and because leading companies are taking concerted steps in that direction. To accomplish this will require us to make firm commitments and take clear actions. One of the key steps is to align with a leading global body like SBTi that can assess and verify our progress towards our net-zero goal," said Clay Heskett, global managing partner of L.E.K. Consulting.
The firm last year launched a “Sustainability Centre of Excellence” which gathers together its global expertise and insights to support clients as they work to meet challenges in climate change and the broader sustainability agenda.
