The electric grid in the United States is a critical strategic asset that sustains national security and economic prosperity, and the most reliable and efficient way to meet surging electricity demand is through continuous investment in an interconnected, modernized grid rather than fragmented off-grid solutions.

A new report from Concentric Energy Advisors highlights that while the power system faces evolving risks, the grid remains critical to the economy, national security, and all aspects of modern life across the country. Utilities have been investing in new technologies to keep energy affordable. The report found that continued investment in the grid could help drive economic growth and prosperity.

The American power grid has been under greater strain in recent years as demand surges from electric vehicles and a growing network of power-hungry data centers. While electricity consumption remained flat for nearly two decades, technologies like AI have arrived faster than planners anticipated, pushing infrastructure toward its limits.

At the same time, the retirement of dependable coal and natural gas plants is outpacing the addition of new, firm power sources. These challenges, compounded by extreme weather and persistent permitting delays, have created a system that faces mounting vulnerability and an urgent need for adaptation.

The grid as an economic backbone

With around 22,000 generators, 55,000 substations, and 624,000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines, the grid is a truly expansive network. Protecting the grid from outages and cyberattacks is essential, but also complex and resource-intensive. More investment is needed in order to keep up with the huge task.

The primary finding from the report is that the value of the electric grid extends well beyond the retail price of electricity. It functions as the backbone for essential services including healthcare, defense, and emergency response, meaning the true economic benefit is found in the costs of disruption that are avoided when the system remains reliable.

Because the grid is a complex, interdependent network, maintaining its reliability requires coordinated industry action and long-term capital investment rather than short-term market outcomes. The report notes that the grid maintains an average reliability factor of 99.95%, serving as the enabling platform for nearly all economic activity.

Managing new demand

A central conclusion is that the surge in new, large-scale electricity demand – driven by AI, data centers, and industrial growth ­– is best managed by connecting these loads directly to the shared grid. Integrating these users allows for the recovery of fixed costs over a broader base, which supports further modernization and keeps prices relatively low.

By contrast, the report warns that off-grid alternatives are less efficient and less resilient, and their adoption threatens to shift between $120 billion and $169 billion in fixed costs onto the remaining customer base over a 30-year period.

"Connecting large customers to the grid provides clear advantages because new large customers broaden the customer base over which fixed costs are recovered, improve asset utilization, and support investment in advanced technologies that benefit all customers," note the authors of the report.

"Through thoughtful planning and appropriate cost allocation, the integration of new large customers strengthens the grid and benefits all customers."

Modernization and resilience

The report details how utilities are driving sustained investments in the grid to support reliability and the deployment of new technologies. These upgrades allow the system to handle increasing complexity while keeping energy prices reasonable.

Research indicates that every dollar invested in transmission infrastructure saves customers $1.60 to $1.80 in future system costs. Additionally, the report finds that roughly 80% of all reported outages are associated with major weather events rather than routine equipment failure.

By utilizing grid-enhancing technologies, utilities can extract greater performance from existing infrastructure, which helps the system remain a scalable and reliable platform for the future. Ultimately, any efforts to reduce investment in this vital infrastructure could jeopardize the economic engine that powers the nation.
