Charles River Associates (CRA) – a global economic, financial, and management consulting firm – has appointed Daniel Mahoney as its chief financial officer, effective March 30. The firm also announced the appointment of Richard Booth as an independent director on the company’s board.

Mahoney succeeds Chad Holmes, who moves on to serve as EVP and chief corporate development officer. He will be based in CRA’s Boston headquarters.

Mahoney brings nearly 20 years of financial leadership experience to the CFO position at CRA. He most recently served as SVP and head of finance at BrightSphere Investment Group, a Boston-based asset management company with over $200 billion under management. In the role, he oversaw the company’s financial planning and analysis, treasury, accounting and tax departments, as well as its risk and internal audit programs. He also served as controller and chief accounting officer, holding a critical role in the company’s IPO.

“Dan brings strength in implementing financial systems, processes and controls for companies experiencing high levels of growth. We believe his depth of public company accounting and financial leadership experience makes him the right choice to lead CRA as our Chief Financial Officer as we continue to grow our organization,” Paul Maleh, CRA’s CEO and president, said.

Before his nearly six years at BrightSphere, Mahoney was chief accounting officer at State Street Global Advisors, the asset management division of State Street Corporation. He began his career with an 11-year tenure at PwC, where he worked in public accounting. Mahoney holds a BA from Tufts University and a CPA certification.

“I am impressed by Charles River Associates’ highly regarded practice areas and the consultants’ multi-disciplinary approach to solving clients’ problems,” Mahoney said. “I look forward to working with the global team on world-class processes in financial reporting and execution as we forge new successes for the company in the years ahead.”

Richard Booth, meanwhile, brings 30 years of financial, strategic, and operational leadership experience to his new role as independent director and member of CRA’s audit committee. He has served as CFO since 2015 for Bottomline Technologies, a New Hampshire-based payment automation software firm. Before that he was VP of finance and corporate controller for Sapient Corporation, and held several senior finance positions at Nuance Communications. Booth has also served in executive roles at EMC Corporation, Mercer, and Coopers & Lybrand.

“Rick is a seasoned professional services executive who brings deep and varied experience across a number of industries to the CRA board,” Maleh said. “We look forward to benefitting from Rick’s 30 years of financial and operational experience and I am confident he will play an important role as a valued member of our Audit Committee.”
